The Central Government has allowed gradual resumption of metro trains across different cities in India from September 7th under Unlock 4.0. It has issued fresh guidelines and SOPs to be followed in the metro trains for both the passengers and staff respectively. Let’s take a look at the new Metro guidelines, timings and SOPs for various cities in India.

Delhi Metro Guidelines, Timings, SOPs
Travelling in metro trains is going to be very different amidst COVID19 pandemic. The Centre has announced that there will be mandatory thermal screening at the entry gates and passengers must sit on alternate seats as per the markings and wear masks all the time.
SOPs & Guidelines for Delhi Metro
- Markings for social distancing is provided and passengers must strictly adhere to it.
- Sufficient dwell time will be given to all trains to enable passengers to board in while following social distancing.
- Compulsory wearing of face masks for all passengers travelling in metro train.
- Sanitisers will be provided at the entrance and passengers must sanitise their hands while entering the station.
- Passengers will also be asked to update their health status on Arogya Setu app.
- Passengers will be encouraged to make more online or cashless transactions and will be asked to use Smart Cards instead of tokens. If passengers are using tokens or slips, they will be properly sanitised as well.
- The metro staff will allow only asymptomatic passengers to board the trains. Passengers displaying symptoms will not be allowed inside and will be directed to nearby medical care facilities.
- To ensure proper social distancing, metro trains may not stop in every station and only halt at a few important stations.
- New smart card called Autope which can be linked to bank accounts will also be available for passengers to purchase.
Timings
The metro trains will operate in two shifts: 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM; 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
In the first phase (September 7th), only the Yellow line from Samaypur Badli to HUDA City will be operated. In the second phase (September 9th), Blue Pink and Gurgaon lines will be started.

SOPs and Guidelines for Chennai Metro
- Thermal screening will be done for all passengers mandatorily at the entrance.
- Wearing a face mask is a must for all passengers in the CMRL premises.
- Proper markings for social distancing will be provided and passengers are to strictly follow them.
- Sanitisers will be provided at the entrance and passengers must sanitise their hands while entering the station.
- Elevators will be allowed for sharing with only 2 or 3 people at a time and will be majorly restricted to senior citizens or people with disabilities.
- Contactless checking of passengers will be done in the security checking area.
- The metro staff will allow only asymptomatic passengers to board the trains. Passengers displaying symptoms will not be allowed inside and will be directed to nearby medical care facilities.
- Travellers will be asked to pass through the Door Frame Metal Detectors while the baggage will be scanned in a scanner.
- Passengers will also be asked to update their health status on Arogya Setu app.
- Parking is available in the metro stations.
- Social distancing inside the train and at stations will be monitored in CCTV cameras regularly.
- All high touchpoints will be sanitized frequently by the metro staff.
Timings
Chennai Metro trains will ply between 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. In Phase 1 (on September 7), the Blue line from Airport metro station to Washermanpet metro station has commenced. In the Second Phase (September 9th), Green Line from St Thomas Mount to Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro will function.
Bengaluru Metro Guidelines, Timings, SOPs
SOPs and Guidelines for Namma Metro
- Namma Metro passengers will be encouraged to use smart cards and go for online or cashless transactions.
- Thermal screening for all passengers will be conducted and those having symptoms of COVID19 will be directed to nearby health care.
- All passengers and staff are required to wear masks all the time in the BMRCL premises.
- Sanitisers will be provided at the entrance and passengers must sanitise their hands while entering the station.
- Use of Aarogya Setu app is encouraged and passengers are required to update their health status on the app regularly.
- Namma Metro trains will function with 20% capacity only and will allow only 400 passengers per train to maintain proper social distancing.
- Proper markings for social distancing are provided in the stations and trains and passengers must adhere to them strictly.
- Alternate seats should be kept vacant as a precaution for preventing COVID19.
- Commuters will have 60 seconds of dwell time in all stations and 75 seconds of dwell time in Kempegowda Station.
- Use of elevators will be restricted to only 4 people at a time.
Timings
In the First Phase (September 7th), only the Purple line will function from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM. In the Second Phase (September 9th), Green Line will also commence functioning in the same timings.
Kolkata Metro Guidelines, Timings, SOPs
Kolkata Metro trains will start their operations from September 12th as opposed to the earlier date of September 8th.
SOPs and Guidelines for Kolkata Metro
- Only passengers using smart cards will be allowed to travel in the metro trains as tokens will not be issued.
- Recharge of smart cards must be done digitally and whose are unable to do it should follow proper social distancing norms and recharge their cards at the counters.
Other SOPs and guidelines, including timings, will be issued on 11th September, Friday.
Hyderabad Metro Guidelines, Timings, SOPs
SOPs and Guidelines for Hyderabad Metro
- Only asymptomatic commuters will be allowed to travel on the metro train.
- All passengers and staff are required to wear face masks and penalty will be imposed for those who do not adhere to this.
- Thermal screening will be conducted at the entrance and symptomatic passengers will be directed to nearby hospitals.
- Proper markings for following social distancing will be provided at stations and inside trains and commuters must stand only on those markings.
- Seats marked with a cross must be avoided and only alternate seats must be occupied by passengers.
- Sanitizers will be provided at entrance and passengers must sanitize their hands before entering the station premises.
- Tokens will not be issued and passengers will be required to use smart cards for a contactless travel experience.
- A counter for purchasing masks will also be set up for passengers who wish to purchase fresh masks.
- Use of the Arogya-Setu app is encouraged for passengers.
Gandhi Hospital, Bharat Nagar, Moosapet, Musheerabad and Yusufguda, the 5 stations which fall in containment zones, will stay closed.
Timings
Metro trains will operate from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Kochi Metro Guidelines, Timings, SOPs
SOPs and Guidelines for Kochi Metro
The guidelines and SOPs for Kochi Metro Rail are similar to other metro train services across India. Additionally, the journey fare has been reduced by Rs 10 and the current fare slab is Rs 10, 20, 30 and 50.
Timings
The metro rails will be operational from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a frequency of 10 minutes and from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM with a frequency of 20 minutes.
