1.Dow Hill, Kurseong, West Bengal
Located around 30km from Darjeeling is the Dow Hill of Kurseong, which is the boss of haunted places in India. It is one such place where paranormal activities do not seize whether day or night! Often compared to Beauty and the Beast, Kurseong’s beauty has enough ghost stories too. The Death Road which lies between the Dow Hill Road and Forest Office is the hotspot. People have seen a headless ghost of a young boy walking and disappearing into the forest and also experienced being followed or watched by a bodiless entity. While some have seen a red pair of red eyes staring at them from the forest, others have seen the ghost of a woman in grey. The paranormal activities are so intense that most visitors lose sense or kill themselves.
2 . Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan
No introduction needed, Bhangarh Fort Rajasthan is one of the most famous haunted places in India. Located in the Alwar district, the ruins of Bhangarh Fort have been declared to be haunted after sunset as per the Archeological Survey of India. Legend has it that during the 16th century, the town tantric fell in love with Ratnavati, the princess of Bhangarh who was considered the most beautiful woman in the world then! Such was his craze that, this lover decided to use black magic oil to allure the princess. When the princess came to know of his evil intentions, she threw the oil on a boulder that rolled up to the lover and killed him. Right before dying, he cursed that the entire village will die and turn to ruins. Since then, the village is left in ruins and haunted by the ghost of this jilted lover.
3. Three Kings Church, Goa
As much of an oxymoron as it may sound, this is true!. The Three King Church in Goa is haunted by spirits of kings who entered into a battle here. Legend has it that both the kings were killed by a rival who wanted to rule the kingdom himself. Soon after the killing, he poisoned himself in the wake of public outrage, and the church is haunted by the spirit of these kings. Locals report hearing noises and screams from this abandoned church as well as experience “a strange ominous presence” around the church too.

4. Lambi Dehar Mines, Uttarakhand
Located 10 km from Mussoorie, this abandoned mine stretches a couple of kilometers in length, adding to the eerie factor and one of the most haunted places in India. The story goes that during the 1990s, around 50000 mineworkers lost their lives here due to inappropriate mining practices. The workers succumbed to a painful death coughing and lung disorder. Ever since then people have reported mysterious incidents at the site like helicopter crashes or hearing wailing and crying in pain.
5. Dumas Beach, Gujarat
What was once a burial ground, Dumas beach is considered the most haunted place in Gujarat. The tourist attraction becomes a devil’s paradise after sunset. Those who tried to test this and stayed back overnight, either never came back or came with the worst supernatural experience possible. Due to once being a burial ground, it is considered to be haunted by several spirits. It lies around 20km from Surat city.
6. Jatinga, Assam
The small tribal village of Jatinga is the only hill station in Assam and infamously known for mysterious “bird suicide”. Scientists and ornithologists have tried several failed attempts to understand the logic behind it but failed. Every year during the months of September to November, in a specific area. The villagers believe this happens because of evil spirits who were doing this to terrorize them making it one of the most haunted places in India.
7. Shaniwarwada Fort, Pune
Often known as a historical attraction of Pune, Shaniwarwada Fort has a spooky side to it too, which makes it even more intriguing. Built by Maratha ruler Bajirao 1 for his wife Kashibai, the fort was a centre of Marathas and Peshwas till independence. The youngest son of Nana Saheb, Narayanrao 16 years old, was his successor. As he was a minor, his uncle Raghunathrao was in-charge of the affairs of the state till he was an adult. This gave birth to jealousy and Raghnathrao’s wife arranged for tribals to kill Narayanrao, the legal heir. The young boy ran towards his uncle’s chambers to save him, screaming “Save me Uncle ”, but was killed and dumped into the river. Now every full moon night people hear sounds of Narayanrao screaming for help or running across corridors.
8. Writer’s Building, Kolkata
One of the oldest buildings in Kolkata, the Writer’s building is mostly an administrative office. Built in 1777 in the colonial era, this was a prime centre of activity till independence. This 250 years old building is so magnificent that some of the rooms are still vacant and haven’t been opened at all for decades. It is said that some of these rooms are kept closed because they are haunted by ghosts of residents who once lived here and some who died here. People have claimed to heard high-pitched giggles, screams, and whispers making the place quite spooky.
9. Delhi Cantt, New Delhi
The capital city New Delhi is believed to have its own share of haunted places and incidents. The Cantonment area in Delhi is the hub of ghosts and ghost stories. Motorists in the area say that it is haunted by the spirit of a lady dressed in white. She asks the riders for a lift and then disappears mysteriously. If you ever visit and happen to spot, do not indulge!
10. Terra Vera, Bangalore
The tech city of Bangalore also has its own share of haunted places. One of them is the Terra Vera House. Built in 1943, this mansion was home to EJ Vaj and his daughters- Dolce and Vera. In 2002, it is said that Dolce was stabbed to death in the house and buried in the premises. Vera moved out soon after. Later people in the area started to hear and see ghostly apparitions and noises from inside. Some even heard the piano being played in the deserted house. Some ghostbusters found the inverted cross and headless statues of Jesus and Mary inside the house. Although now it is reduced to the ground, yet none dares to venture near it.
